Matthew D. Dake

Attorney At Law

Matt was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and attended the University of Northern Iowa. He graduated from Creighton University Law School in 1997, near the top of his class.

Following law school, Matt was admitted to both the Iowa and Nebraska bars. He began practicing law in Columbus, Nebraska, then moved back to Iowa in 2000, and started working with Tom Wertz, in what is now Wertz & Dake Law Firm. Since that time, Matt’s practice has been devoted almost entirely to representing injured workers across the state of Iowa.

Matt has represented hundreds of clients since 2000, at all stages of litigation, and all the way to the Iowa Supreme Court. On many occasions, He has obtained awards at trial that have resulted in his clients receiving weekly benefits for the rest of their lives.

In 2008, the current Iowa Workers Compensation Commissioner, Chris Godfrey, selected Matt as one of two attorneys from across the state to investigate how injured workers are paid disability in our system. He spent hours convincing the Commissioner and the legal community that the proposed changes would have resulted in a loss of benefits to injured workers. Matt’s efforts in this regard were very successful since the Task Force voted 7-1 to keep the current system in place, a recommendation that was adopted by Commissioner Godfrey.

Matt and his wife keep very busy with their six children’s activities, and serving their church and community.
