Iowa lawyers are required to obtain credits for continuing legal education in order to maintain their law license.  The Iowa Association for Justice on February 9 and 10, 2012, hosted their annual major workers’ compensation seminar for attorneys.  Not only was Tom Wertz instrumental in organizing the legal seminar for lawyers, he presented on two separate workers’ compensation issues – ethics and commutations.

The ethics presentation was on the first day of the seminar and was headed up by attorney Pat Roby, focusing on workers’ compensation issues that could have ethical implications.  The second topic, on the following day of the seminar, was on cutting edge techniques attorneys can learn in order to properly represent their clients in a workers’ compensation claim wherein a commutation of future benefits is being considered.  Tom Wertz’s experience with handling workers’ compensation claims involving a commutation of benefits provided a great opportunity for other lawyers to learn best practices in representing injured workers.
